Granulated blast-furnace slagThe granulated blast-furnace slag or slag sand is produced by the granulation of liquid blast furnace slag with water and/or air. It is a fine-grained (< 5 mm), glassy by-product of pig iron manufacture in a blast furnace. Due to its physical and chemical properties, ground granulated blast-furnace slag has been used for more than 100 years, mainly in the cement industry, as the main component of so-called Portland slag and blast-furnace slag cements (CEM II/S and CEM III to EN 197). These cements have several special properties. Concretes made with these cements are particularly resistant to attack by chemicals and de-icing salt, and against the so-called alkali-silicic acid reaction. The following products are available:
